Dragon fruit is a tropical fruit that typical has a red skin and
a white, soft flesh speckled with seeds. Best eaten raw, dragon fruit is mildly sweet and its taste can be described as a blend between pear and kiwi.
The flesh of the red dragon fruit is slightly sweeter than white flesh varieties and has a beautiful vibrant red to purple colour. Both types however are very subtle in taste.
The medium red dragon will weigh approximately 350 grams. The texture can be compared to kiwi and melon! Red dragon fruit offers an array of health benefits. They are a good source of magnesium and contain beneficial plant compounds like polyphenols, carotenoids and betacyanins. Taiwanese doctors are said to recommend dragon fruits to patients with diabetes, to help normalize blood sugar levels. A concoction made of dragon fruit, honey, and cucumber juice can moisturise and soothe sunburnt skin. Dragon fruit is usually eaten fresh but Nicaraguans are fond of drinking a beverage made from crushed dragon fruit, water and lime juice.
