    Imported from Vietnam

The name Rambutan is derived from the Malaysian word “rambut,” translating to mean “hair,” and is a descriptor given for the fruit’s hairy, spine-like appearance.

While this hairy red fruit looks like something out of a fairy-tale, rambutans are a common (and delicious) snack native to the Malay-Indonesian region and other regions of tropical Southeast Asia. It is closely related to several other edible tropical fruits, including the lychee, longan, and mamoncillo (Spanish lime). The fruit flesh is translucent, whitish or pale pink, with a sweet, mildly acidic flavour reminiscent of grapes.

In order to eat a Rambutan, peel off the skin and remove the grape-like flesh. In addition, you should remove the seed as it is inedible.

Rambutan will have some variation in the colour of the hairy shell but inside the flesh should always be white.

Beneath the dazzling exterior of these wonderfully aromatic fruits is tender, pinkish-white flesh that will delight your tastebuds with its brilliant flavour. The flesh is chewy and supremely succulent and boasts a sweet, fruity savour with notes of strawberries and grapes and is complemented by subtly acidic undertones.

Although rambutans are best enjoyed when eaten fresh out of hand (simply discard the skin and central seed), they can also be utilised in a range of sweet and savoury food and drink recipes! The flesh is perfect for combining in fruit salads, topping ice cream and sorbets, imparting some sweetness to curries and soups, and simmering into jams! They are also ideal for creating bright, floral cocktails and mocktails!

As well as being divinely delectable and versatile, rambutans are nutritionally valuable too. In particular, they are good sources of vitamin C and copper.
